Sparks Renew Contract For Assistant Coach Fred Williams

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Sparks General Manager/Head Coach Derek Fisher announced today the renewal of Assistant Coach Fred Williams’ contract. Williams joined the Sparks coaching staff prior to the 2019 season and has played a vital role in the team’s success over the last two seasons.

“I am extremely thankful that Coach Fisher and the Sparks ownership group have given me the opportunity to continue my coaching career in Los Angeles,” Williams said. “I look forward to working towards a championship with a great group of women this season.”

In his two seasons with the Sparks, the team went 37-19 in regular season play and entered both postseasons as the No. 3 seed.

“Fred’s knowledge and experience in the WNBA continues to be a major asset to the Sparks organization,” Fisher said. “I am excited about the continuity we’ve established the last two seasons with our coaching staff and look forward to having Coach Fred back in person with our players.”

Williams’ head coaching resume includes the University of Southern California (1995-1997), the Utah Starzz (1999-2001), the Atlanta Dream (2012-2013), who he led to the WNBA Finals in 2013, and most recently the Tulsa Shock/Dallas Wings (2014-2018). Williams has coached professional and collegiate women’s basketball for over 35 years.

Williams is from Inglewood, California and is a graduate of Boise State University. He was recently named to the Boise State Athletics Legacy Project, honoring Black athletes who competed between 1968-80 and helped lay the foundation for diversity and inclusion in Bronco Athletics.
