The Los Angeles Sparks extended their winning streak to seven games, overcoming a 10-point fourth- quarter deficit to beat the Dallas Wings 84-81. The day was dedicated to the late NBA superstar and WNBA advocate Kobe Bryant on his 42nd birthday as players and coaches wore special gear and Kobe and Gigi Bryant were honored in the arena with special tributes.

Britney Sykes led the offense with a season-high 23 points, followed by Candace Parker (22), Nneka Ogwumike (14) and Chelsea Gray (12). Parker also recorded her seventh double-double of the season, scoring a season-high in points (22), rebounds (14), and adding six assists. Parker also moved into 16th place all-time in WNBA scoring (5542) behind Katie Douglas (5563).

The Sparks shot 70.6% from the floor in the first quarter as Sykes had a strong first ten minutes, shooting 4-for-4. The forward successfully put pressure on Dallas from both ends of the floor while guarding the league’s current top scorer, Arike Ogunbowale. Parker closed out the first quarter with a three-point buzzer-beater putting the Sparks up 25-20.

Although the Sparks performed well defensively, Dallas took the lead in the second quarter and outscored the Sparks 22-13. Sykes finished the first half with 10 points to go along with 13 from Parker. Both teams finished the half with over 50% shooting, but the Wings ultimately took the lead 42-38 at the break. The Sparks shot zero free throws in the first half.

Led by Ogunbowale and former Spark Marina Mabrey, who’d finish with 15 points, the Wings kept their lead throughout the third quarter and took a 66-59 lead into the fourth. Early in the final period, the Wings went up 71-61, their largest lead of the game. However, that lead quickly evaporated as the Sparks went on a 13-2 run led by Parker and Sykes to go up 74-73.

The game seesawed back and forth until the Sparks grabbed an 83-77 lead. Ogunbowale kept getting to the basket and was able to bring the Wings to within three at 84-81, but rookie Te’a Cooper drew a charge as time expired on Ogunbowale’s last-second attempt to tie the game.

Despite a tough test from the Wings, the Sparks were able to hold on to their winning streak and moved into a tie with the Las Vegas Aces for second in the WNBA standings at 10-3. LA is just 0.5 games behind the first-place Seattle Storm at 11-3.

The Sparks will look to extend their winning streak to eight games against the Minnesota Lynx this Wednesday at 5 p.m. PT on CBS Sports Network.
