LA Sparks Sign Gabby Williams To Contract Extension

Sparks Acquired Williams in Trade on May 9

LOS ANGELES (May 14, 2021) – The Los Angeles Sparks announced today the signing of Gabby Williams to a contract extension. The Sparks acquired Williams on May 9 in a trade with the Chicago Sky in exchange for rookie Stephanie Watts and the rights to Leonie Fiebich. Williams, a 5-foot-11 wing, will remain on the suspended list for the 2021 season to honor her French national team commitments.

“It’s great news to announce this extension with Gabby Williams today and solidify her as a core part of our group moving forward,” General Manager/Head Coach Derek Fisher said.

“We’re excited to bring Gabby Williams into the LA Sparks organization,” Fisher said on May 9 after the trade. “At just 24 years old, Gabby is a versatile player who still has the potential to make a major impact in this league. She fits into what we’re building in Los Angeles and we look forward to the future with her in a Sparks uniform.”

Williams spent her first three WNBA seasons in Chicago where she averaged 6.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.2 steals in 20.8 minutes per game. Missing just one game over three full seasons, Williams gained experience playing both guard and forward positions.

“I’m so excited to be joining the LA Sparks and begin my journey with an iconic organization,” Williams said. “This is an amazing opportunity for me that I am so grateful for. Although I am unable to suit up this season, having this extension allows me to look forward to my future with the Sparks. This is going to be the start of something special.”

Williams was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft. Williams graduated from the University of Connecticut where she led the team to a 148-3 record, four Final Four appearances, and back-to-back National Championships.

The Sparks begin the 2021 regular season at home against the Dallas Wings tonight, May 14, at 7:30 p.m. PT on Spectrum SportsNet and Facebook.
