The Three-Time All-Star Will Partner with the Sparks, Equality California, and Rock The Vote | Gray To Donate $50 for Every Assist in 2020 Season
LOS ANGELES – All-WNBA point guard Chelsea Gray announced today that she is partnering with the LA Sparks, Equality California, and Rock The Vote to launch the Chelsea Gray Assist For Equality program. Gray will become an official ambassador for Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, as well as an ambassador for Rock The Vote’s Hoopers Vote initiative.
Gray will donate $50 for every assist she records during the 2020 WNBA season, with Equality California Institute and Rock The Vote splitting the proceeds. The Sparks will match her contribution.
“The more I have learned about our voting system, especially at the state level, the more I want to help educate others on it as well,” Chelsea Gray said. “Voting is a huge part of our democracy and is pivotal for the future of our country. Sitting out this year is not an option. I challenge others to continue educating themselves and join me in donating any dollar amount they can per assist I dish out this season to Equality California and Rock The Vote.”
Chelsea Gray, a Hayward, California native, will work closely with Equality California on their LGBTQ+ voter engagement efforts, including participating in their Golden State Equality Awards fundraising event, hosting a Power Hour discussion on the 2020 election, and other digital campaigns. Equality California will host a landing page where fans will be able to track Chelsea’s contributions and donate themselves.
“With so much at stake for the LGBTQ+ community this November, Chelsea Gray knows the importance of making each of our voices heard — on the court and at the ballot box,” said Equality California Executive Director Rick Chavez Zbur. “We are so inspired by Chelsea’s commitment to the fight for full, lived LGBTQ+ equality, and we’re excited to team up with her and the LA Sparks this year.”
As part of the Chelsea Gray Assist For Equality program, Gray will also represent the WNBA as a participant in Rock The Vote’s Hoopers Vote initiative, an effort to register voters and get them to the polls.
“Chelsea Gray knows how important it is for young people to make their voices heard in this election and the impact they can have on charting the direction of our Democracy,” said Rock the Vote President Carolyn DeWitt. “We’re thrilled to be teaming up with Chelsea to make sure that fans, especially young fans who watch her on the court and look up to her everyday have the resources they need to cast a ballot in November.”
Chelsea Gray and the Los Angeles Sparks are currently in the middle of the 2020 WNBA season being played at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
