LOS ANGELES, CA – February 7, 2017 – The Los Angeles Sparks re-signed Essence Carson, Executive Vice President and General Manager Penny Toler announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 6-foot shooting guard and nine-year WNBA veteran joined the Los Angeles Sparks last season and helped the team win the 2016 WNBA Championship while starting all 34 games for the team, averaging 8.1 PPG.
“Essence’s leadership and toughness were key ingredients in helping us return to Championship form,” said Toler. “I am really glad she has decided to continue her journey with the Sparks.”
As the #7 pick in the first round of the 2008 WNBA Draft, Carson helped the New York Liberty to four post-season appearances in her eight years with the team, including three trips to the Eastern Conference Finals. During her time with the Liberty, she averaged 7.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 231 game where she started 119 times and left as the franchise’s history ranked seventh in career points with 1,790 total.
