Statement on Behalf of the LA Sparks Organization

The Los Angeles Sparks support the verdict issued today in the murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. The killing of George Floyd was an abhorrent tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Floyd family.

Our organization recognizes that one guilty verdict does not change the fact that people of color face systemic racism on a daily basis and continue to be victims of police brutality. While a modicum of justice was served with this ruling, it’s important to remember that true justice will come when all citizens, regardless of race, gender, or religion, feel safe in their communities and have equitable access to education, housing, healthcare, and economic mobility.

The Sparks are committed to our social justice pillar #ChangeHasNoOffseason, and will continue to work alongside our players, the WNBA, and our community to combat systemic racism and sexism through public advocacy, social responsibility, and electoral action.
