Sparks sign top WNBA free agent Cappie Pondexter

LOS ANGELES, CA – February 14, 2018 – The Los Angeles Sparks have signed free agent and WNBA veteran Cappie Pondexter, Executive Vice President and General Manger Penny Toler announced today.

A decorated WNBA veteran, Pondexter was voted one of the Top 15 players in league history in 2010 and in 2015 was named to the Top 20@20, a list of the top 20 players in WNBA history for the league’s 20th anniversary. Pondexter is the fourth all-time leading scorer and sixth all-time in assists in WNBA history and in 2008, she took home the gold medal in the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. She is a seven-time WNBA All-Star (’06, ’07, ’09, ’11, ’13-’15), three-time All-WNBA First Team selection (’09, ’10, ’12) and WNBA Finals MVP (2007).

“We are very excited about having Cappie join our team,” said Penny Toler, LA Sparks Executive Vice President & General Manager. “She has the ability to play both guard positions. She is a fierce competitor with championship pedigree.”

A graduate of Rutgers University, the 5-foot-9 guard was selected second overall in the 2006 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury, where she went on to become a two-time WNBA Champion (2007, 2009). In 2010, she was traded to the New York Liberty and led the WNBA in points (729), field goals made (254) and minutes played (1167) on her first year with the team. Pondexter was traded to the Chicago Sky in 2015 and in her last season with the team averaged 9.6 PPG, 4.3 APG and 2.9 RPG.

“To be born in the state of California and to then finish my basketball career here, I’m more than thrilled,” said Pondexter. “I’ve always joked with Coach Agler that I’d end up playing for him and words can’t describe how happy I am to actually have the opportunity. The Sparks has been one of the frontier teams since the inception of the WNBA and I’m blessed to leave my mark in its history books.”

Founded in 1996, the Los Angeles Sparks of the Western Conference of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) have won three WNBA Championships (2001, 2002, 2016). The Sparks remain one of two active teams in the league to have won back-to-back titles, and have qualified for the playoffs in 18 of their 22 seasons. Led by an ownership group directed by 5-time NBA Champion Magic Johnson and Mark Walter, the Sparks are dedicated to ensuring that each home game at Staples Center encapsulates a championship entertainment experience, while also showcasing the best global female athletes on the court. The team plays their regular season from May through September. Please
