The Sparks organization is filled with trailblazers, pioneers and industry disruptors. Our players are champions and entrepreneurs. Our front office is shattering glass ceilings and fighting for equity in the community. Our owners are trendsetters, embedded in the fabric of Los Angeles. Representing California as the only professional women’s team, the Sparks move the needle, innovate the game and #LeadTheCharge.
By Eli Horowitz, Sparks Director of Public Relations and Communications
When the Sparks sat down to think of our 2019 theme, we wanted to go deeper this season. We wanted a slogan that represents this organization and the landmark accomplishments unfolding on and off the court – a phrase that encapsulates the essence of Sparks culture.
We wanted a theme that speaks to our incredible players, who are not just the best basketball players in the world, but also entrepreneurs. Players like Alana Beard, who is coming off back-to-back WNBA Defensive Player of the Year Awards, is also spending the offseason working in Silicon Valley. Candace Parker, a two-time WNBA MVP, is also a full-time analyst for Turner Sports.
We envisioned a theme that honors the three championships that Sparks Executive Vice President and General Manager Penny Toler has helped the team win as the longest tenured and winningest GM in WNBA history. We also wanted one that represents our President and COO Danita Johnson, who helped sellout Staples Center with our #WeAreWomen campaign.
We pictured a theme that embodies other Sparks front office wins, including winning the 2018 WNBA Ticket Sales Franchise of the Year and leading the league in attendance the past two seasons. We wanted it to speak to our incredible focus on community service, recognized when Nneka Ogwumike won the 2018 WNBA season-long Community Assist Award.
And finally, we needed a theme that epitomizes Managing Director and Governor Eric Holoman and our ownership group’s support and commitment to helping the Sparks grow.
What became clear is that our players, executives and owners shared something in common: an unflinching and relentless commitment to innovation, growth and impact. Whether it’s on the court or in the boardroom, this is a group of people leading the charge.
