Sparks 2021 Free Agency Update

Both the LA Sparks and the WNBA are set to celebrate their 25th anniversary season in 2021. But first, the league will enter an exciting free agency period on Feb. 1, nearly one year after the league and the players union negotiated a new Collective Bargaining Agreement on Jan. 14, 2020.  To see the entire list of WNBA free agents, check out the league’s official list here, and see below the list of Sparks free agents. Unrestricted Free Agents- The following players can negotiate a contract with any of the 12 WNBA teams and sign any time after Feb. 1, 2021:

  1. Candace Parker
  2. Chelsea Gray
  3. Riquna Williams
  4. Seimone Augustus
  5. Reshanda Gray

 Core Player: The Sparks designated the 2016 MVP Nneka Ogwumike as their core player on Jan. 14, retaining exclusive negotiating rights.

Restricted Free Agents: Players with four years of service are considered to be Restricted Free Agents. Restricted free agency gives the player’s prior team the right to keep the player by matching a contract offer the player signs with another team (Right of First Refusal). If the player signs a contract offer with another team, the player’s prior team has four days from the date it receives the offer to determine whether it wishes to match. If the offer is matched, the player will remain with her team. If the offer is not matched within the four-day period, the player will be under contract with the offering team.

Suspended/Contract Expired: Although Chiney Ogwumike’s contract expired at the conclusion of the 2020 WNBA season, because she sat out in 2020 due to medical precautions, the Sparks maintain exclusive negotiating rights with the 2014 No. 1 overall pick:

  1. Chiney Ogwumike

Reserved Players – Players with three or fewer years of service are considered to be Reserved Players. The player’s prior team has exclusive negotiating rights.

  1. Te’a Cooper

*The Sparks re-signed Te’a Cooper on January 11, 2021 

Players Under Contract- The following players are not 2021 free agents and remain on the LA Sparks current roster:

  6. Marie Gulich
  7. Te’a Cooper

 Overseas Players- The Sparks maintain the rights to the following overseas players:
