Sparks to Celebrate 25 Years of WNBA Basketball in the City of Champions with #RootedInLA themed 25th Anniversary Season
Sparks to Play First 11 Home Games at LA Convention Center
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Sparks and the WNBA announced today the 2021 season schedule, which will include 32 regular season games. As one of the three remaining, original franchises, 2021 marks the 25th Anniversary season for both the Sparks and the WNBA, the longest-standing women’s professional sports league. This season’s theme will be #RootedInLA, honoring the history and legacy of the three-time WNBA champions. The Sparks will play their first 11 home games at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) before moving back to Staples Center for the final five home games and playoffs.
The 2021 Sparks are led by General Manager/Head Coach Derek Fisher, who has steered the Sparks to a 37-19 regular season record in his first two seasons as head coach. The roster features MVP, WNBA Champion and WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike, two-time WNBA champion Kristi Toliver, two-time All-Star Chiney Ogwumike, and the new additions of All-Star guard Erica Wheeler and former No. 2 overall pick Amanda Zahui B. The Sparks talented roster has a strong blend of veteran, championship experience and exciting young players including Brittney Sykes and Te’a Cooper. A full training camp roster is forthcoming.
The Sparks will play the first 11 home games of the 2021 season at the Los Angeles Convention Center and are excited to introduce a new playing court to be used at both LACC and Staples Center. After the Olympic break, the Sparks will return to Staples Center for the remaining five home games and playoffs.
The 32-game schedule will include 16 home games and 16 road games leading into the playoffs. The Sparks will play the New York Liberty twice and the remaining 10 opponents three times each.
The first half of the regular season kicks off on May 14 with the Home Opener against the Dallas Wings at 7:30 p.m. PT at LACC and goes through July 11 when the Sparks host the Minnesota Lynx at 6 p.m. PT at LACC. The league will then pause for the Olympic break. The Sparks return from the Olympic break on Aug. 15 at Staples Center against the Indiana Fever at 6 p.m. PT. The regular season finale will be Sep. 19 at 1 p.m. PT at the Dallas Wings.
Sparks games will air locally on Spectrum SportsNet with nationally televised games on ESPN and other WNBA partner networks. An official broadcast schedule will be announced soon, and the full 32-game schedule can be found now at lasparks.com. A downloadable PDF version is available here.
Pending LA County guidelines and in accordance with all health and safety protocols as outlined by the WNBA and the Sparks, a limited number of fans will likely be able to attend home games starting in June. More information will be provided on this in the coming weeks.
Media guidelines pertaining to covering games and practices are still being determined by the WNBA and will be sent when they become available.
In addition to the new court and new LA Sparks logo announced on March 22, the Sparks and all teams will wear new uniforms in 2021, presented by Nike. The Sparks will have three jerseys including a white Heroine version, purple Explorer version, and a black Rebel edition.
Marquee Partner: EquiTrust Life Insurance Co.
