The Los Angeles Sparks #WeAreWomen campaign began in 2015 in an effort to honor standout women and young girls in the Los Angeles community who share our goals of empowering the Los Angeles community and females of all ages. With the 5th anniversary, we are honoring six women in 2019 who exemplify the following categories: Health & Wellness, Financial Literacy, Community, Entrepreneurship, Service, and Media & Entertainment.
Congratulations to LaWanda Hawkins, the 2019 recipient of our Woman of the Year Award, and to all finalists for their exceptional work and dedication to their respective fields of health & wellness, financial literacy, community, entrepreneurship, service, and media & entertainment. Thank you to everybody who came out to our #WeAreWomen Brunch & Panel Discussion and game vs. the Connecticut Sun.
2019 Woman of the Year
Founder, Justice for Murdered Children
LaWanda Hawkins knows tragedy because it took her only child, Reggie. Yet her tenacity in the fight to stop (gun) violence in our communities and protect all people never ceases. She is the founder of Justice for Murdered Children, a dedicated board member of Justice for Homicide Victims, a State Commissioner and LA County Commissioner for Crime Victims United. Her dedication to affected families is tireless, around-the-clock, yet she moves with a never-ending fire in her soul. In April of this year, she launched a campaign to bring awareness to unsolved murders, covering the LA area with bus shelters and electronic billboards with photos of countless murder victims. LaWanda is not only an activist in this fight against the violence in our communities, but most importantly, she cares because she understands and knows the pain and grief that comes when your child, mother, father, or any loved one is murdered. She believes that through her tragedy there will be triumph one day for all.
